The Church was going to give away a gun....????
As a way of encouraging young people to attend a conference, the church was going to give away an $800 gun. At least I think that I've read this article correctly.
The church had several competitions going on, including a marksmanship competition. The AR-15 is a standard for those sorts of competitions, so the giveaway would have drawn some competitors. Even knowing this, I am not sure as a pastor I would want to give away a gun as a prize, even if it was a shooting competition.
